The Goal: Create and configure Directory Display Settings, so you control exactly what information about a business or individual appears when you publish a member directory to your website.
Before You Begin:
- You need access to Settings and permission to manage website configuration.
- Directory Display Settings control what information about a business or individual is shown if you publish a directory of members to your website. You may want different levels of listing based on membership type — a basic level with just a business name and a logo, and an enhanced listing with photo galleries, videos, maps and so on.
- Two listings are seeded in the database at setup: Standard Listing and Deluxe Listing. Standard Listing is used as the default when you create membership types. Use them as designed or customize them to suit you.
- To see how your selections affect the display in your directory, see Understanding the Directory Display Options.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Go to Settings, Website section, click Directory Display Settings. The listings already configured in your system are displayed, with the number of contacts assigned to each in the Count column.
- Click the Add button to create a new listing, or click the name of an existing listing to edit it.
- Configure the following:
- Name: Provide a name for the listing. This field is required.
- Description: Provide a description of the listing. This field is required.
- Rank/Priority Placement: This setting dictates where organizations assigned to this listing are displayed in the directory. A value of 1 places them at the top; a value of 255 places them at the bottom. NOTE: If your directory is set up to display alphabetically, alphabetical order overrides this priority setting.
-
RECOMMENDED: Tick the Advanced Options check box, which sits in the footer of the dialog beside Cancel and Done. The additional configuration sections only appear once it is ticked.
- Configure Show Individual Details: choose which details for your individuals or agents are displayed when this listing is used — Prefix, First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name, Common Name, Suffix, Title and Primary Organization.
- Configure Show Contact Details. These settings are used for both organization and individual memberships. Tick each piece of contact information you want displayed — Address, City, State/Province, Postal Code, Country, Phone, Email and Website — then choose which types to display from the matching Types list. For example, tick Phone and then choose Work, Home or Other.
- IMPORTANT: If you choose a particular type of contact information — a toll-free phone number, say — you must also have that type of information recorded on the contact’s Overview tab, or nothing will display.
- If you add an address but Google does not show it on their maps, try an abbreviation, or try the whole spelling of the street name. For example: try 123 Main Place or 123 Main Pl.
- Configure Show Custom Fields: select the custom fields you want to display in the directory. The drop-down list shows the fields that have been configured for directory listings.
- Configure Display Additional Contacts:
-
Related: If selected, contacts related to the organization are displayed both in the directory search results and on the organization’s information page.
- If the individual does not have a listing in the directory and you search for the organization, the individual will not appear as a search result; select the organization and the person appears as a related contact inside the organization’s listing.
- If the individual does have a listing, searching for either the organization or the individual returns both, and you can open either one.
- With Memberships: Select this option to display, within an organization listing, only those contacts who have an active membership.
- Primary Contact/Organization: For an organization, tick this if you want the primary contact to be identified with a banner. The individual must also be set as the primary contact for the organization and set to display in the directory. For an individual, tick this if you want the individual’s primary organization identified with a banner.
-
Related: If selected, contacts related to the organization are displayed both in the directory search results and on the organization’s information page.
-
Configure Options:
- Use Contacts Website for Listing page: Select this to link directly to a contact’s own web page rather than their page in your directory. Applicable only when assigned to a public directory; it is not available in the Info Hub.
- Open Links in New Tab: Select this so the user can open the new page without closing the directory.
- Use Form to Send an Email: Select this to have the directory present a contact form instead of exposing the email address.
-
Show: tick each element you want on the listing.
- Public Web Content: displays icons on the member’s directory page when they have posted web content, such as job postings or hot deals.
- Membership Type: displays the member’s membership type.
- Search Logo: displays the contact’s primary image when the directory is searched.
- Search Description: on the V1 directory, displays the short description in the directory list. On the v2 public modules this setting has no effect.
- Gallery: the member may display a gallery of photos on the web page.
- Video: the member may display a video on the web page. NOTE: only links to regular YouTube or Vimeo videos are supported. YouTube Shorts will not work — it must be a full YouTube video.
- Highlights: displays a highlights section on the web page, generally a bulleted list of member features.
- Map: displays the location of the organization on a map on the web page.
- Bio/Description: displays the Bio from the contact’s More Info tab.
- Primary Contact Title: displays the title of the primary contact alongside their name.
- Chapter: displays the chapter the contact belongs to.
- Configure Retargeting: enter the Google Tag Manager Container ID you were given when Google Tag Manager was installed. Google Tag Manager is a free tool that lets marketers add and update website tags — conversion tracking, site analytics, remarketing and so on — without editing your website code.
- Click the Done button.
Common Pitfalls
- Contact info will not display: Choosing a contact type under Show Contact Details — a toll-free phone number, for example — has no effect unless the matching information is also recorded on the contact’s Overview tab.
- Missing the advanced settings: Everything beyond Name, Description and Rank/Priority Placement is hidden until you tick Advanced Options, which is in the dialog footer rather than in the form itself.
- Priority ignored: If your directory is set to display alphabetically, alphabetical order overrides the Rank/Priority Placement value, so listings will not sort by the number you entered.
