Before You Begin:
- You need permission to manage membership types and pricing.
- Create your membership type first, as described in Add a New Membership Type.
- Have at least one discount of type New Membership configured. See Setup Discounting for instructions on setting up discounts.
- The promo code discount is only applied when someone applies online. If you add a membership from the back office, the promo code is not used.
Microlearning Overview
* Important note: this video has not been updated since the V2 implementation. You no longer "have to use V1 to get promo codes" as stated in the video.
How Promo Code Discounts Work in V1 vs. V2
To generate membership sales, you may wish to offer a discount on new memberships. Perhaps you are running a campaign for new prospects and want to offer discounts by providing a Promo Code to be entered on your membership application form.
- V1: Promo codes apply the discount to each and every line item in the membership purchase. For example, a $20 discount on two items (the Gold Membership and a Setup Fee) would reduce each item by $20 in V1 of the application.
- V2: The discount is applied to the total cost of all membership items. For example, a $20 discount on a membership with two items would reduce the total price by $20 in V2 of the application.
To check or change your membership application version, see Global Membership Settings. GrowthZone will continue to add new features to v2, so the best practice would be to switch to v2 if possible.

. You can alternatively click to add a new discount. See Setup Discounting for further instructions on setting up discounts.
- Click Done.
When a new member selects this membership type from your membership application, they will be prompted to enter the Promo Code associated with this discount. If applicable, the discount will be applied automatically.
Important Things to Note with V2
- The Discount name is visible to the applicant in their Billing Details at checkout.
- Promo code entry is only available with a single membership selection. If multiple memberships are selected at one time, the promo code field is not available.
What does it look like?
-
At checkout, the discount appears as a single line item and is not attached to any specific item.
-
Back-office invoice: The discount applies to the highest-$ amount item (if there is more than one that makes up the membership, e.g., hidden fee items). In the above example, the $1400 membership price was made up of two items, $1200 and $200 each. So, the discount shows up in the line item of the $1200 amount.
-
Clicking into the discount looks like this:
- But the accounting entry goes against whatever your Discount is set up for. It doesn’t spread it out over your items on the invoice. It only looks at the Discount Type that is associated with your Discount and applies your discount to that account.
-
The invoice to the customer will use whatever template you have, but here is an example of what it might look like for you.
- Discount Type: When setting up your discounts, you must use the New Membership Discount Type. This is the only type available to select for your Membership Type.
- Discount Price: Either a percentage or a flat amount discount can be set up.
Common Pitfalls
- Expecting back-office orders to honor the code: The promo code discount is only applied when a member applies online. Adding a membership from the back office will not use the promo code.
- Using the wrong Discount Type: Only discounts configured with the New Membership Discount Type are available to attach to a membership type.
- Selecting multiple memberships: The promo code field only appears for a single membership selection. If the applicant selects multiple memberships at once, no promo code field is shown.
