The Goal: Set the End Type on a membership type so its memberships are either dropped automatically when they expire or left to be ended manually.
NOTE: End Type is set per membership type — there is no per-member override. To exempt a single member from auto drop, move that membership to a type whose End Type is Manually ended.

Before You Begin:
- You need permission to edit membership types and membership renewal options.
- Auto-drop must already be configured at the organization level. To review the global setting, go to Memberships, click Settings and select Auto Drop Setup. The page opens as Membership Settings.
- Identify the membership type whose end type you want to set.
Step-by-Step Instructions
For certain memberships, you may not wish to enable auto-drop. The End Type that governs auto-drop is set on the membership type, so start by confirming which type the member holds:
- For the desired member, click the membership shown in the Memberships section of the member’s Overview tab and note the membership type.
NOTE: This opens a read-only Membership Details window with a Close button only. End Type cannot be changed from here. - Go to Memberships, click Settings and select Membership Types. The page opens as Membership Settings.
- Click the name of the membership type. The Edit Membership Type window opens.
- In the Renewal Options section, select the desired End Type — Manually ended or Automatically Expires.
- Click Done.
Common Pitfalls
- Forgetting this is a per-type setting: Changing the End Type here affects every membership on this membership type, not just one member. It does not change the organization-wide auto-drop rule configured at Memberships > Settings > Auto Drop Setup.
- Looking for End Type on the member record: The membership link on a contact’s Memberships panel opens a read-only Membership Details window. It has no Advanced Options, no Renewal Options and no End Type.
- Expecting a per-member exception: Auto Drop Setup has no exclusion list. The only way to keep one member from being dropped while others on the same type are is to move that membership to a different membership type.
