The Goal: Add a membership from the back office and hold it in Pending Approval status so the contact does not receive a directory listing or other active membership benefits until the membership invoice is paid.
Before You Begin:
- You need permission to add memberships and to review/approve membership applications.
- Have the contact record ready. If you have not added the membership yet, see Add a Membership to a Contact.
- Setting the Initial Membership Status to Pending Approval prevents the contact from receiving a directory listing or other active membership benefits until the application is approved.

Step-by-Step Instructions
When adding a membership from the back office, if you wish to wait until the membership invoice is paid before activating the membership, you can set the Initial Membership Status. While the membership is in Pending Approval status, the applicant will not have a directory listing or any of the other active membership benefits.
- Add a membership to your contact as described in Add a Membership to a Contact.
- Enable the Advanced Options check-box.
- Choose Pending Approval from the Initial Membership Status list.
- Click Done.
The contact will now be displayed as Pending Approval. Once the invoice has been paid, you can approve the application as follows:
- On the contact's Profile tab, click the Actions ellipsis next to the membership you wish to approve.
- Click Review/Approve.
- Click Approve Application.
Common Pitfalls
- Approving before the invoice is paid: The whole point of Pending Approval is to withhold benefits until dues are received. Confirm the membership invoice has been paid before you click Review/Approve, otherwise the contact gets a directory listing and active benefits without having paid.
