The Goal: Understand what Membership Levels are and when to use them, so you can offer the same membership at multiple fixed price points (a fee schedule).
Before You Begin:
- Membership Levels are best suited to Membership Types where the membership name is the same except for the level assignment.
- The applicant can self-select which level is appropriate for them.
- The pricing is fixed for each level — this is NOT variable pricing, but fixed, pre-determined pricing based on the selected level.
- Each level uses the same Directory assignments and number of Categories.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Membership Levels allow you the flexibility to offer the same membership but offer different prices – often referred to as a fee schedule. Membership levels should be used when your Membership Types have these characteristics:
- Membership Name is the same except for level assignments
- The applicant can self-select which level is appropriate
- The pricing is fixed for each level - this is NOT variable pricing but fixed, pre-determined pricing based on the selected level
- Each level uses the same Directory assignments and number of Categories

Common Pitfalls
- Using Levels for variable pricing: Levels are for fixed, pre-determined pricing only. If applicants need to enter or negotiate their own amount, use a variable-pricing approach instead — Levels will not accommodate it.
